The Command central maps to the ALT
key on a standard US English language keyboard
Try property down ALT + R
and see if that works.
Alternitavely, holding downwards ALT
during EFI (when the screen is grey directly after power on) will nowadays you with a carte du jour of boot options. This should include the recovery sectionalisation on the hard bulldoze, as well as any external media (OS X media for example) the system considers bootable

Y'all do need to be property it downward at the right point in the process. Try turning the computer off, and and then the second you lot press the ability button hold down ctrl. This has ever worked on my Late 09 iMac. If you've got optical media, pressing C should brand it boot from that.

The Windows key
plus the R
key (i.e.,Win
+R
)
Re/boot the computer and do not really printing this combination until the instant you hear the obnoxious "startup chime" (AKA "macOS is cleaved again everyone far and broad hear it!"), and hold this combination until you come across the Apple tree logo, and so feel complimentary to release. That is all. Stupid OS.

Only an update, you lot take to hold down the Control fundamental (by itself) until the Recovery Menu pops up. I was having the same sort of upshot, on a Mac Desktop A1186; using a standard keyboard. Later several attempts by trial and fault, I finally got the unit of measurement to boot to the recovery menu, by property down CTRL; and CTRL ONLY - Right Later on pressing the power push AND hearing the apple tree chime. Just wanted to share this in case anyone else ran into this aforementioned issue. Thanks.

How long does it take for the Recovery Menu to showup? I can only run into a light grey screen and after one infinitesimal a folder with a question marker starts to blink

Cmd should map to the Windows cardinal, on a UK keyboard.
Perchance they're different for different keyboard layouts.
It would only take you 3 reboots to figure out which it was anyhow ;-)
